A Little House Tour

Saturday, March 08, 2014

So, I was all gung-ho about posting pictures of our house as we created the space we wanted to live in, but I never followed through on the "after" side of things. The word "after" is kind of laughable, though, because there is SO. MUCH. MORE that we want to accomplish and change. We have a cozy little house, and we're still trying to capitalize on our storage and create organization. Even though I look at these photos and see a huge list of must-dos, I must admit that there is quite the difference between the before and after. I love, love, love our little home.

First up: The Entry way.

There is an obvious absence of closet space in our entry way. To compensate for that fact, we hung two rows of hooks beside the door, which is more than enough space for any outdoor clothing we need to hang. We purchased the white sofa table seen above, and the baskets, to create a space to organize our hats/mits/scarves, mail, cookbooks, and any other things that need a home to hide in. The tall, dark cabinet in the photo below is actually clever shoe storage purchased from Ikea. We were going to buy a fancier one, but this was the only one that could fit in that spot (it has to be screwed to the wall). That worked out nicely for us - this particular cabinet cost all of $40! There's actually a hidden panel of light switches inside of it. We just flip open the top cabinet to access them.

Joey has drafted up plans to build a bench seat in that window, which I will adorn with a seat cushion and decorative throw pillows. The curtain rod will then be moved onto the inside wall, and the curtains will be able to close the whole little seating area off. That might explain to you why I've left the curtains so ridiculously long!

The Dining Room

Getting rid of the ceiling fan was not in our original  plan, but upon possession of the house, we discovered that it was quite out of order. This girl was NOT complaining. We had fun picking out a light fixture for our dining room. Ikea to the rescue!

We are planning on building a large dining table to better suit our family's needs. And when I say "we", I mean Joey, of course. I'm looking for a couple different wooden chairs to complete our set. Once I've got an eclectic collection to satisfy, I'm going to paint them some unifying colour to complete the space. I'm not really a fan of the yellow wood finish.

The Kitchen

I am in love with our kitchen. We have so much counter space, and I really like not having cabinets hanging over my head while preparing food. We're tossing around the idea of installing a stainless steel hood over the stove, as well as a couple pendant lights. These are just dreams, though!

Lydia's Room

Lydia's room is the most calming room in our house. It's so bright and happy. Although it's hard to tell in the pictures, it's a much cheerier shade of minty blue (Spring Mint by Benjamin Moore). I love her room now, and I'm really looking forward to recreating it as she gets older and her needs change. I've got a moving pallet reading corner all planned out for when she's into that kind of thing.

That's all I can post right now. Our bedroom is still a work in progress, and our basement is still lacking window/door frames. The boys' room is pretty much complete, but I want to wait to post pictures of it until the rest of the basement has found a bit more order. :)

I hope you enjoyed the mini tour of our happy home!
